Shinji Isobe

Shinji Isobe started photography in 2009, inspired by Robert Frank’s The Americans, which revealed the power of photography to evoke emotions and tell stories beyond words. His style has evolved from focusing on composition to capturing raw, intuitive moments that reflect a subject’s inner emotions.

He is drawn to urban photography for its constant changes and serendipitous moments. His creative process is guided by intuition, focusing on the atmosphere, light, and shadow of a place. He seeks locations that offer unique "colors" — a combination of atmosphere, air, and the way people carry themselves.

A major challenge in his career was capturing natural expressions before his subjects noticed the camera. To overcome this, he adjusted his approach, using fast autofocus and moving around to capture more authentic moments.

For Shinji, regular practice and trusting his instincts are key to successful photography. He is inspired by photographers like Robert Frank and Tatsuo Suzuki but strives to develop his own voice and techniques. A proud moment was when his prints received heartfelt feedback in exhibitions.

Shinji hopes his photos evoke deep emotions and leave a lasting impact. His future projects include documenting life in Asian slums and expanding into documentary photography, with plans to travel internationally.
